History of Radio Station CHIM 102.3 FM

Station on the air since April 22, 2000.

The first CHIM Christian Radio station was located in Timmins, Ontario. It actually was Canada's first non-commercial Christian radio station! Now the CHIM radio network has expanded into a non-commercial broadcast network with stations across Canada. Our vision is to see a Christian radio station in every city or town across Canada. We will go anywhere where there is enough interest.

The original vision was conceived in 1984 while Roger de Brabant was working for OnTel, at a time when Christian Broadcasting was illegal in Canada. After many years of prayer and waiting upon the Lord, the breakthrough came with the June 3, 1993 CRTC decision which finally allowed Christian Radio Stations in Canada. Immediately upon hearing the good news, de Brabant started working on an application for a Christian station in Timmins. At this time, the only Christian Radio Stations that were on the air where in Newfoundland, who had their two stations since before Confederation, and where therefore not subject to the rules and regulations of the CRTC.

Approved on October 27, 1995 CHIM would become Canada's first non-commercial Christian radio station. On air testing began on December 24, 1995 and we officially went on the air on that Glorious Easter Sunday morning at 8:15 am, on April 7,1996.

The station's licence renewal application was denied by the CRTC on October 23, 2012 due to regulatory violations. As a result, CHIM-FM was ordered to cease broadcasting by the end of the broadcast day on November 30, 2012.[11] Despite the FM stations' going off air, CHIM remains active via an online stream on their website, while the station's owners have been trying to bring the station back to FM radio, as bolstered by a late 2012 letter writing campaign.[12] The last song to play on CHIM as an FM station was "Emotional" by Christian Quast, Source: Wikipedia.
